Waterfront Design Plan

We are developing a new vision for the waterfront – and we need your help! Together, the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Tourism Sault Ste. Marie and Destination Northern Ontario are creating a Waterfront Design Plan to guide the development of the Soo’s waterfront in the future. This is our chance to stitch great places together along the water’s edge and identify opportunities that will transform the waterfront into a cohesive and vibrant place for all.

Project Timeline

Phase 1: Creating the Vision (December 2023 – January 2024)
  • Create a collective vision and strategic goals for the future of the waterfront.
Phase 2: Design Concepts (January – March 2024)

Phase 3: Final Waterfront Design Plan (March 2024)
  • Share and celebrate the final Waterfront Design Plan

About the Project
What is a Waterfront Design Plan?
The Waterfront Design Plan will be an action plan that guides future development, infrastructure, and public realm investments, including strategies for implementation. The plan will support opportunities for tourism and economic development, and has the potential to enhance the existing waterfront to transform it into a world-class destination and help put Sault Ste. Marie “on the map!”

What are the objectives of the project?
  • View the waterfront as a destination, with amenities capable of attracting visitors, local residents and fostering economic development.
  • Develop a Waterfront Design Plan that has a bold and broadly supported vision; one that is innovative and leading edge, but nimble and responsive to change.
  • Create connections between the waterfront and the commercial hub of downtown, including the downtown plaza, Queen Street and connecting links (East St. Brock St., Spring St., Elgin St. and Gore St.).
  • Build an even stronger sense of place; to build community and to improve the quality of life for residents.
  • Leverage opportunity through the Waterfront Design Plan to support the business community and create business growth and prosperity.
  • Promote the integration of passive and active recreation and commercial and tourism activities in the adjoining areas.
