Sault Ste. Marie Transit - Service Changes Effective March 13

February 16, 2016

As a result of service adjustments, Sault Ste. Marie Transit will implement schedule changes for conventional transit and Parabus service, effective March 13, 2016.

Conventional Transit Service

Starting March 13, 2016:
  • The last half-hour bus will depart from the terminal at 6:15 p.m. (rather than 6:45 p.m.).
  • The last bus to leave the terminal will be at 11:15 p.m. (rather than 11:45 p.m.). Therefore, the last bus of the evening will leave the terminal 30 minutes earlier.
  • On Saturday and Sunday, the first departure from the terminal will be at 6:15 a.m. (rather than 5:45 a.m.).

Specialized Transit (Parabus)

Parabus service from Monday to Friday will increase from 58 to 65 hours of service per day. These 7 additional hours each day translates into more availability for trip bookings and fewer turn-a ways.

Additional Details

Elimination of the 11:45 p.m. Conventional Transit Bus

Ridership on the 11:45 p.m. bus is minimal. This low demand in conventional transit can be translated into increased service for Parabus users.

Parabus does not currently offer sufficient service hours to accommodate the rapidly increasing ridership demands for the Sault Ste. Marie population.

Getting To and From Work Using Conventional Transit

From the implementation of this service change on March 13, 2016 to the period of April 30, 2016, Sault Transit Services will assist those riders who use the 11:45 p.m. bus travelling from their place of work.

If you fall into this category, please contact our office at 705-759-5438 for assistance.
*Please note that verification of employment will be required.

The Reason For This Service Adjustment

Ridership surveys were conducted to establish how many people were actually using the 11:45 p.m. daily bus, and the 5:45 a.m. weekend bus. These surveys indicated very low ridership.

The shift in service from conventional transit to specialized transit (Parabus) will be made in order to meet the growing demand for increased Parabus service hours.

Conventional Transit Hours Can't Remain the Same in Addition to Increasing Parabus Service

The current Transit Service budget does not support expanded service.
