Can you afford not to be prepared?

Monday, May 8, 2017

It is no secret that many families and individuals are looking to cut back on spending. But with the frequency of disasters, both natural and manmade, it's important to be prepared. Preparedness doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. A recent survey conducted in our community shows that financial constraints are the most common barriers that prevent Saultites from getting prepared. Because of this, Emergency Preparedness Week 2017 will focus on how to get prepared in a budget-friendly way.

Sault Fire Services will be launching a 20 Weeks to Preparedness campaign through Facebook, Twitter and the City's website. The campaign will provide steps for residents to build a budget friendly kit and plan in 20 weeks. "Getting prepared does not have to be costly and it does not have to be completed in one day," explains Lauren Perry, Assistant Chief - Emergency Management. "Many of the items you need for your emergency kit can be found around your home, as for the rest keep your eyes open for sales or head to our website for creative saving tips."

To learn more about how you can be prepared, visit the Emergency Preparedness Showcase on May 13th at the Great Northern Road Wal-Mart from 11 - 2 p.m. This is a fantastic opportunity for residents to meet their local emergency response network and pick up important information. There will be free give-a-ways, demonstrations of emergency equipment, vehicle tours and draws for 72-hr emergency kits. Bring along your pets to get registered with the Humane Society and have their picture taken at our pet photo booth, because preparedness is for the whole family!
