Heritage Designation: Wawanosh Monument

HERITAGE DESIGNATION IN THE MATTER OF THE ONTARIO HERITAGE ACT, R.S.O. 1990, CHAPTER O.18
TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie intends to designate the property at the following municipal address as property of architectural and/or historical value or interest under Part IV of The Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, chapter O18.
REASON FOR PROPOSED DESIGNATION – WAWANOSH MONUMENT
It is recommended that the Wawanosh Monument located at 96 Great Northern Road be designated as having cultural heritage value under the Ontario Heritage Act Part IV. The Monument commemorates the location of the former Wawanosh Indian Residential School which was constructed by Reverend E. F. Wilson in 1879 and was named after Chief Wawanosh a prominent Chippewa chief and veteran of the War of 1812.
