Qualification for Election to School Board
The following qualifications and disqualifications can be found in the Municipal Elections Act, the Municipal Act, and the Education Act. You are qualified to be elected to a School Board if you:
- are a Canadian Citizen;
- have attained the age of eighteen (18) years on or before voting day (October 25, 2010);
- are a resident within the area of jurisdiction of the school board; and
- are entitled to be an elector for the school board for which you intend to be a candidate.
You are disqualified from being a member of School Board if you are:
- an employee (except during a leave of absence) of a school board;
- a judge of any court;
- a member of the provincial legislature or the House of Commons or the Senate;
- a Crown employee within the meaning of the Public Service Act who is a Deputy Minister or is in a position or classification designated in the regulations passed under the Public Service Act; and
- an inmate of a penal or correctional institution under sentence of imprisonment.
- a person who is an employee of the school board can run for a school board if that person applies for leave of absence without pay during the period of the election. If that person is elected, that person shall resign their position as an employee.
