For births occurring on or after Monday, July 28, 2008
Parents of children born in Sault Ste. Marie on or after Monday, July 28, 2008 must register the child’s birth with the Office of the Registrar General (ORG) electronically through the ServiceOntario website www.serviceontario.ca or by completing a Statement of Live Birth form and forwarding it directly to the Office of the Registrar General at P.O. Box 4600, 189 Red River Road, Thunder Bay, ON, P7B 6L8. For further information please call 1- 800-461-2156.

Travel letters will not be available for these births. An expedited birth certificate process may be requested when registering the birth online.

For births occurring before July 28, 2008
Parents of children born in Sault Ste. Marie before Monday, July 28, 2008 must register the child with the Clerk’s Department, Level 4, Civic Centre.

A Statement of Live Birth form and pre-addressed envelope is given to parents of newborns at the hospital. Instructions for completing the form are included.

When the Statement of Live Birth is received by the Clerk’s Department, it is checked, processed and forwarded to the Office of the Registrar General (ORG). Once the ORG has registered the birth the parents will receive a Notice of Birth Registration. At that point parents may apply for a birth certificate, either online at www.serviceontario.ca or by paper application (forms available at the City Clerk's Department or at provincial government offices.)

Travel letters are available for newborns whose parents have submitted the Statement of Live Birth form but have not yet received a Notice of Birth Registration. Please contact the Clerk’s Department at 759-5388 for further information.
