Flood Prevention Tips
Homeowners can help prevent basement floods by following these tips:

Slope ground water away from the home or property.

Seal window wells and cracks in floors and walls.

Direct water, using downspouts, at least 1.2 m away from the home.

Direct water from the footing drains to the storm sewer or pump it away from the foundation of the home.

Connect sump pumps to the storm sewer system or ensure that it empties onto the lawn.

Ensure water run-off flows to the ground surface or storm drainage system.

Install protective plumbing devices.

Seal and tighten cleanout caps and backwater valve caps.

Ensure service pipes between the municipal sewer main and the home are in good condition.
Protective plumbing devices assist in preventing sewage from entering basements. These devices are designed to provide a barrier to the flow of backwater and can significantly reduce the potential of basement flooding. Protective plumbing can range from sump pumps to backwater valves, which permit flow in one direction but prevent a return of flow in the opposing direction. Although these devices may help to protect against main sewer backups and basement floods, it is important to remember they are not fail-safe.
