City provides tax relief during COVID-19 pandemic

Tuesday, April 27, 2021

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is reminding taxpayers that the next installment of City tax payments is scheduled for May 5, 2021. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, taxpayers will have more time to pay their property tax bill if they choose.
  • Interest and penalties on property taxes have been waived until June 30, 2021.
  • Pre-authorized payments are not impacted. Taxpayers that wish to cancel a pre-authorized payment should complete the pre-authorized property tax payment cancellation form by April 28, 2021 at noon and email it to the Tax department at citytax@cityssm.on.ca. To re-enroll in a pre-authorized payment plan, taxpayers will have to submit a new application.
The Civic Centre is currently open to the public. Those that prefer to make a payment at the Central Collections office will be subject to enhanced screening measures, physical distancing and should expect delays upon entry. Taxpayers are encouraged to use one of the following non-contact payment methods for the May 5 payment date:
  • By credit card at Paysimply (www.paysimply.ca/Partner/Details.aspx?id=23237). The link will direct you to a third party site where you are bound by the terms and conditions of use of PaySimply. You will be charged a 2.5% service fee which will be directed to PaySimply. For questions on this option, please contact PaySimply directly.
  • Outside drop-off box located near the front steps of the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre (cheques only, no cash).
  • Mail cheques to: Accounting & Tax Division, 99 Foster Drive, Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6A 5X6
  • By telephone or online banking through most financial institutions.
  • Choose one of the pre-authorized tax payment plan by April 28, 2021 at noon: Automatic bank withdrawal where payments are withdrawn from your bank account on the fifth of each month (January to October) or a due date payment plan where payments are withdrawn from your bank account on the date taxes are due.
Members of the City’s Tax department are available to provide assistance throughout this process. If you have any questions, please email citytax@cityssm.on.ca or call 705-759-5290. The City thanks the community for their patience during this time.
