Emergency Preparedness Week challenges participants to 'Be Ready for Anything'

Monday, May 3, 2021

Emergency Preparedness Week (May 2-8, 2021) is an opportunity to get prepared to protect yourself, your family and your community during an emergency. This year’s theme, Emergency Preparedness: Be Ready for Anything encourages Canadians to take action to be prepared for a range of emergencies they could face in their region.

During Emergency Preparedness Week, different emergency preparedness challenges will be posted on Sault Fire Services social media sites for residents to complete. Participants can contribute as an individual, family or group in as many challenges as they want. The exercises are designed to build resiliency to difficult situations and reduce the risk and impact of whatever emergency we might face.

“By taking a few simple steps, you can become better prepared to face a range of emergencies anytime, anywhere. The challenges we have created help you be prepared to take on those difficult days. We all face moments of crisis in our lives from encountering a car accident to having to stay in our homes for 6 weeks. Now, more than ever, we all have a role to play in emergency preparedness and in emergency response,” says Lauren Perry, Community Emergency Management Coordinator.

Participants can complete each challenge by visiting and posting answers on Facebook, Twitter by mentioning @SaultFire, Instagram by tagging @SaultFire or email fire@cityssm.on.ca. All entries into the contest must be submitted by May 31.

“In addition to the challenges, it is important to know the risks specific to our community and our region to help you better prepare. Make a plan so you and your family know what to do and get an emergency kit. During an emergency, we may need to get by without power or tap water and will all need some basic supplies. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency,” adds Perry.

Individual preparedness goes a long way to help people cope better both during and after a major disaster. During Emergency Preparedness Week, take action to be better prepared. Get an emergency kit now it can make a world of difference.
