Notice: Amendments to Cemeteries By-law

Sault Ste. Marie City Council passed amendments to Cemeteries By-law 2012-129 on November 15, 2021. The by-law amendments will become effective once approved by the Registrar, Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (Bereavement Authority of Ontario).
 
Copies of the by-law are available from the office of the City Clerk, Level 4, Civic Centre, 99 Foster Drive, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, P6A 5X6 and on the municipal website at saultstemarie.ca/cemeterynotice.
 
By-law amendments include:
Specific wording to the effect that the City does not buy back interment rights
Number of cremated remains permitted in a niche
No disinterments from a mausoleum crypt will be permitted
A new section regarding Muslim burials
Miscellaneous wording regarding wooden crosses, adornments on a mausoleum crypt and the prohibition of aggregates in flowers beds
Removal of restrictions regarding depth of markers in the ground and to specify dimensions for concrete pads for markers
