Over 10,000 meals delivered through Every Breakfast Counts

Friday, October 1, 2021

The Every Breakfast Counts committee is pleased to announce the results of its 2021 programming. In total, approximately 10,095 meals were distributed this summer to local children. Over an eight week period from July to August, a weekly average of 1,262 meals were distributed, exceeding the number of meals delivered in each of the past three summers.

Nutritious food items (including fresh fruit/vegetables, milk, cheese and  bread) were distributed through Algoma Family Services’ Student Nutrition Program, City of Sault Ste. Marie outdoor pools, United Way Harvest Algoma, Child Care Algoma EarlyON Child and Family Centre, Sault Ste. Marie District Social Services Community Hubs and the Indigenous Friendship Centre.

The committee wishes to recognize the outstanding efforts of the local volunteers who supported our efforts. 200 volunteer hours per week were required to pack and assemble meals at United Way Harvest Algoma, and volunteers facilitated through the Algoma Leadership Table delivered meals throughout the community.

“Every Breakfast Counts continues to make a difference because of the tremendous support of our community and hard work from volunteers,” said Mayor Christian Provenzano. “The generous donations we’ve received and the dedication of volunteers allows us to continue providing needed meals to members of our community.”

Ongoing coordination is facilitated by the Every Breakfast Counts committee, comprised of the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Mayor and CAO Offices, Sault Ste. Marie District Social Services, United Way Harvest Algoma, Algoma Family Services, Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, Child Care Algoma and EarlyON Child and Family Centre and the Indigenous Friendship Centre.

“The collaboration of our partners helps us continue to address the gap in service from children who rely on breakfast programming offered during the school year,” said Mike Nadeau, Sault Ste. Marie District Social Services CEO. “Healthy eating habits have a significant impact on the achievement of optimal health, growth and intellectual development for youth, and Every Breakfast Counts continues to make a difference in this regard.”

Every Breakfast Counts was conceptualized in the spring of 2018 as a means to address a service gap in the community by providing meals to youth who rely on breakfast programming offered during the school year. Over the summer, $39,204 was raised through donations from the community – along with $22,500 in one-time funding from the Ministry of Children Community and Social Services – to secure the operation of Every Breakfast Counts programming moving forward.
