The Legal Department provides advice and consultation to City Council, City Departments, and local boards.
Advice is not provided to the general public.
The Legal Department defends and pursues the Corporation's rights in the courts regarding contracts, interpretation of by-laws and statutes, damage to City property and taxation. It prosecutes to enforce City by-laws and relevant statutes. On specific issues, outside legal counsel may be retained to represent the City's interest.
Advice related to real estate and planning law is also provided to the Corporation. The Department represents the Corporation before the Ontario Municipal Board, negotiates agreements with developers, and buys and sells land as directed by City Council.
